Sony Embraces AI in PlayStation Studios, Says Human Creators Won't Be Replaced

Sony has integrated artificial intelligence tools into its first-party PlayStation Studios for game development. The company's leadership emphasized that AI is meant to enhance human creativity, not replace it.

AI tools enhance creativity

CEO Hiroki Totoki stated that AI is an amplifier of human imagination and a catalyst for new possibilities. PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino echoed that AI augments the capabilities of studio talent and performers. Sony expects AI to increase both the volume and diversity of content produced by its studios.

Sony has developed several internal AI tools. Mockingbird is a tool that quickly animates 3D facial models from performance capture, reducing animation work from hours to a fraction of a second. It has been used at Naughty Dog, San Diego Studio, and in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. Another AI tool generates 3D hair models from videos of real hairstyles, also used in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. Gran Turismo Sophy is a deep reinforcement learning racing agent that adds competitive gameplay to Gran Turismo 7.

Sony plans to use its own intellectual properties as key differentiators in the market. The company's strategy focuses on leveraging its first-party studios and AI tools to create unique gaming experiences.
