A new mod brings true high dynamic range (HDR) support to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on PC. The Community Shaders HDR mod is available now after nearly two years of development.
Mod fixes highlight clipping with proper tonemapping
The mod adds native HDR10 output with peak brightness configurable up to 10,000 nits and support for the BT.2020 color space. It fixes Bethesda's original highlight clipping by implementing proper tonemapping. According to modder Filippo Tarpini, Skyrim originally did no tonemapping and simply clipped all highlights, causing snow, fire, skies, and spells to lose detail. The HDR mod preserves detail in bright areas and also improves shadow detail without losing contrast.
The mod requires the base Community Shaders mod and Windows HDR mode to be enabled. It is available worldwide now.
Tarpini worked with MusaRenoDX, Davo, and Doodlum to create the mod. The team also tweaked shadows to retain more detail, addressing the game's tendency to clip near-black colors due to old contrast formulas.
