A wave of PlayStation Network account hacks is targeting media personalities and random users. Hackers are exploiting Sony's internal support system to gain unauthorized access.
Attackers exploit Sony support system
The attackers use a PSN ID and old transaction data to change the account email and disable two-factor authentication. Colin Moriarty's account was compromised even though he did not click any suspicious links.
PlayStation support was unaware of these targeted attacks. The support team estimated it would take three weeks to resolve the issue.
Sony has not yet responded to the vulnerability. The method of attack suggests a systemic weakness in account recovery procedures.
