OmniDrive Firmware Update Adds Support for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 Disc Dumping

OmniDrive, a custom firmware for PC optical drives, has reached version 1.0.2 and now supports dumping discs from 12 major gaming platforms. The software turns compatible Blu-ray drives into legal retro-game disc dumpers, replacing older modified JB8 firmware that Redump.org recommended in 2022.

Custom firmware enables legal disc extraction across multiple console generations

OmniDrive works with specific PC drives using the MediaTek MT1959 chipset (specifically the MT1959HWDN variant) from Hitachi-LG Data Storage. Compatible desktop writers include the ASUS BW-16D1HT, while slim optical drives like the LG BU40N and BP50NB40 also support the firmware.

The updated firmware handles disc formats for Nintendo GameCube, Wii, and Wii U; Microsoft Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S; Sony PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 5; Sega Dreamcast. It reads standard lead-out CDs and DVDs alongside console game discs.

OmniDrive enables users to dump game data from supported platforms using the drive's native hardware capabilities. The firmware replaces previous workarounds by providing a unified tool for legal disc extraction across multiple generations of consoles.

The RibShark GitHub repository hosts the OmniDrive project, with additional technical context available on the Redump Wiki. The software was initially released in February and continues to receive updates through version 1.0.2.
