Microsoft Unifies Copilot App, Retires Deep Research and Group Chat

Microsoft is merging its consumer and enterprise Copilot experiences into a single unified app, a move that simplifies how users access AI tools for both personal and professional tasks. This consolidation matters because it centralizes chat, image generation, and productivity app access into one interface, reducing the need to toggle between separate applications. Users will find a more streamlined workflow as the platform integrates directly with Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Consolidating consumer and enterprise tools into one interface

The new unified Copilot app combines the standalone consumer Copilot with the Microsoft 365 Copilot experience. It retains core features like chat and image generation while adding direct access to the Microsoft 365 productivity suite. Personal and work data remain strictly separated within the app, maintaining distinct security and compliance controls for each context.

Microsoft plans to release this unified experience during the July through September quarter. The app will support per-user licensing with consumption-based charges, allowing organizations to manage costs based on actual usage. It also connects to external tools via plugins, extending its functionality beyond the core Microsoft ecosystem.

Microsoft is discontinuing several existing features as part of this transition. The Deep Research, Podcasts, and Group Chat features will be retired on August 18, 2026. Core chat and image generation features remain free with usage limits, while Microsoft 365 subscribers receive higher limits and access to advanced agents.

We looked at the last Copilot update, several of the same balance and stability themes came up. Microsoft executive Jacob Andreou shared that the team is working on a new logo and that the best is yet to come. The unified app represents a significant shift in how Microsoft structures its AI offerings for both consumers and businesses.
