Microsoft Edge Adds Google Account Sign-In for July 2026 Update

Microsoft Edge is preparing a change that expands how users can authenticate across the platform. The browser will soon accept Google accounts for signing in, which breaks from the current restriction that limits sync features to Microsoft Account logins only. The update allows users of Gmail or Chrome to maintain synchronized bookmarks and passwords across different web browsers more easily.

Microsoft Edge currently relies on a Microsoft Account (MSA) login to synchronize settings and data across devices. The upcoming update aims to provide a more flexible single sign-on experience by presenting the Google account as a preferred option for users who want to avoid creating another profile. IT administrators can manage this change through a specific policy setting called NonMicrosoftAccountSignInEnabled, which controls whether the feature appears on Windows or macOS systems.

Users will see the new authentication method roll out with the July 2026 update cycle. Microsoft Account authentication remains available for users wishing to retain their existing configuration. This update prioritizes user flexibility by offering an additional sign-in option without displacing existing account methods.

Desktop users can consolidate their credentials across services while preserving full synchronization capabilities for settings and data. IT admins can use the NonMicrosoftAccountSignInEnabled policy to decide whether employees see the Google sign-in option or stick with Microsoft Account authentication only.
