Meta Launches Model Capability Initiative to Track Employee Keystrokes and Screen Activity

Meta has launched the Model Capability Initiative, an internal monitoring system designed to track employee activity on corporate laptops. The program records keystrokes, mouse movements, and screen content to gather data for training artificial intelligence models. This policy applies to all users of company-issued devices without exception.

Tracking limited to pre-approved work applications like Gmail and VSCode

The tracking software operates only within a pre-approved list of work applications. These include Gmail, Google Chat, VSCode, and Meta's internal AI assistant, Metamate. The system does not monitor activity outside of these specific programs. Meta states that the collected data is not used for any other purpose.

Andrew Bosworth, Meta's chief technology officer, confirmed that employees cannot opt out of the monitoring system. He stated that there is no option to disable the tracking feature on corporate laptops. This mandatory implementation ensures that all employee activity within the designated applications is captured for AI development.

The initiative coincides with significant workforce restructuring at the company. Meta plans to lay off approximately 8,000 employees, which represents 10 percent of its total workforce, starting on May 20. The company has also canceled over 5,000 job postings while simultaneously investing more than $600 billion in AI data centers by 2028.

Reports on the initiative originated from the New York Times and Reuters. The company has not confirmed a specific launch window for the broader rollout of the technology. The monitoring policy remains strictly limited to the internal corporate environment.
