Mainland China's consumer SSD market faced a sharp contraction in April 2026, with total monthly shipments falling approximately 26% compared to March. Year-over-year data shows a steeper decline of 62%, reflecting sustained weakness in DIY demand and an oversupply that industry analysts expect to persist in the near term.

Zhitai secures third place while retail prices fall amid oversupply

Kingston held the top brand position across channel sales for consumer SSDs, maintaining its lead through broad distribution reach. Lexar ranked second, followed by Zhitai in third place, with Colorful and rounding out the top five. Zhitai's placement marks a notable achievement among domestic storage brands amid broader market pressure.

Retail trade prices for mainstream consumer SSDs continued to drop throughout April, driven by inventory overhang and weak end-user demand. Some large-capacity models experienced price declines of several hundred Chinese yuan within the month, intensifying margin pressure across the supply chain.

The pricing inversion—where wholesale costs approach or exceed retail values—has created challenges for distributors and manufacturers alike. Distributors note that stock movement is slowing, requiring changes in ordering levels and marketing plans while the market stays weak.

Market analysis from Bo Bandang indicates that the structural imbalance between supply and demand will likely continue without a near-term catalyst. The DIY segment, which historically drives consumer SSD volume, shows no signs of recovery, leaving brands to navigate a highly competitive environment with limited pricing power.

Zhitai's rise to third place in brand rankings underscores its ability to maintain channel presence despite the broader downturn. Local producers are using regional supply networks and lower costs to stay competitive versus foreign competitors amid the current market correction.

The April data reflects a market in transition, with shipment volumes and pricing trends pointing to continued consolidation among storage vendors. Companies handling stock well and adjusting to changing customer needs will recover faster once the market stabilizes.
