News came from Intel officially confirming the next generation Nova Lake will adopt the 18A-P production process. This is a very big milestone of Intel. It is important because it means that there is an opportunity to improve the performance for desktop users without raising power consumption. This is a key test of Intel's internal foundry capabilities.
Intel confirms next-gen desktop CPU uses advanced 18A-P node
Nova Lake is the first client product that adopts the 18A-P process. As revealed by Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, they are currently ahead of schedule. They expect the design wins at launch to be 2x the previous generation Panther Lake. This shows a big push of confidence on production.
18A-P provides 9% faster speed (same power consumption) or 18% power reduction (same speed) over regular 18A. Intel will give more technical information about Nova Lake at CES in January. For now the rumors are pointing to hybrid design with TSMC N2P for compute tiles.
At the same time, Intel is working on changes to production to cater to the growth of datacenter. They are going to cut Panther Lake production capacity to increase the production of Granite Rapids datacenter CPU. Wildcat Lake products are also in high demand, but supply is still falling behind market demand.
