A tool called Game Compressor updates its compression engine to use a built-in Windows feature, offering a practical way to shrink large game installations. This approach matters because modern titles often consume hundreds of gigabytes, leaving little room for other software or future releases.

The Game Compressor utility is available on Steam and functions as a management layer for game files. It sits between the user and the game client, intercepting updates and applying compression to reduce the final disk footprint. The tool handles queue management and monitors patches to ensure compressed files stay synchronized with the latest game versions.

The software relies on the Windows LZX compression algorithm to achieve significant space savings. For example, it reduces the installation size of Ark Survival Evolved from 169 GB to 91 GB, which is only 54 percent of the original volume. The Red Desert title also sees a reduction of 32 GB through this same process.

The developer warns that the tool may cause stuttering in games that use the DirectStorage API. DirectStorage bypasses the CPU by sending data directly to the GPU, so adding a decompression step introduces latency.
