Fable Devs Defend Demo After Fans Spot Clueless Guards and Fast Gold Payout

Playground Games has addressed fan criticism of the Fable demo, explaining that the guards' lack of awareness and the fast gold payout were due to the easiest difficulty setting. The demo was set to 'Story' difficulty, which makes guards less aggressive and allows quicker rewards.

Demo difficulty explained by developer

Fable is an upcoming action RPG developed by Playground Games, known for the Forza Horizon series. The game is scheduled for a worldwide release on February 23, 2027.

According to the developer, higher difficulty levels will feature more aggressive and skilled guards. The fast 18K gold earning was sped up for the demo; normal gameplay will require more effort to accumulate wealth.

The official Fable X account stated: "In this demo, the team played on 'Story' difficulty. It's perfect for players who would rather not be chased halfway across the countryside by an overenthusiastic guard. On higher difficulties, the guards are far less polite… and considerably sharper with their swords."

Fable was delayed from its original Fall 2026 window to avoid competing with Grand Theft Auto 6. February 2027 is also crowded with other major releases, including Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Persona 4 Revival.
