David Kramer Builds Physical NFT Minting Device With Raspberry Pi 4

David Kramer has built a physical device designed to mint non-fungible tokens using a Raspberry Pi 4. The project serves as a humorous parody of the concept of an infinite money machine rather than a serious wealth-generation tool. Kramer positions the contraption as a digital entrepreneur's attempt to automate the creation of digital assets.

Humorous hardware project generates low-res face NFTs in three seconds

The system relies on a Generative Adversarial Network known as a DCGAN to create its output. Kramer trained this specific model on an Apple MacBook equipped with an M3 chip. The software generates hybrid face images as the primary content for the minted tokens.

Kramer exported the trained model from PyTorch to the ONNX format to ensure portability. The resulting file weighs 53MB and uses float32 precision. This configuration allows the lightweight Raspberry Pi 4 to handle the inference process efficiently.

The device produces a 128-pixel square image in approximately three seconds. Each generated NFT includes a machine-generated slogan following the template "This is a (adjective) NFT and I want to (verb) it." The low resolution of the output highlights the novelty nature of the project.

Kramer has listed the physical device on the OpenSea marketplace. He has sold one unit for 9.92 USD (around $9.92). This transaction confirms the device's availability as a tangible novelty item rather than just a software demo.

The project combines embedded hardware with generative AI software in a playful context. It demonstrates the portability of ONNX models on low-power devices. The initiative remains a lighthearted commentary on the NFT market.
