Google is preparing to release Android 17 this summer, and the update brings several practical new features. Users can expect better control over notifications, screen sharing, and device security.

New features enhance control and security

The stable version of Android 17 will roll out to a wide range of Pixel devices, from the Pixel 6 series through the upcoming Pixel 10 series. This includes the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet, making it one of the broadest updates in recent years.

One standout feature is app screen sharing, which lets users share a single app window during video calls instead of the entire screen. Another is saved app pairs, allowing two frequently used side-by-side apps to be bundled into a single home screen shortcut.

Eligible devices span Pixel 6 to Pixel 10

A new rich status bar API enables real-time dynamic information, such as a rideshare countdown, to appear directly in the status bar. Notification cooldown automatically dims alert volume for subsequent notifications from the same app during a flood, reducing annoyance. Asset protection lock uses the phone's accelerometer to detect sudden snatching motions and locks the device, requiring biometric unlock.

Android 17 has been available in beta for months, and the stable release is expected in summer 2025. Eligible devices include the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 series, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8 series, Pixel 8a, Pixel 9 series, Pixel 9a, Pixel 10 series, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet.

This update is expected to be the last Android version supporting all Tensor-era Pixel phones, marking a transition point for Google's mobile platform. Users of older Pixel models might need to upgrade before future Android versions end support for those devices.
