Digital Foundry's analysis suggests that Unreal Engine 5 games on the Nintendo Switch 2 will be limited by the system's CPU. The console is expected to lack support for key UE5 features like Lumen and Nanite due to this bottleneck.
Digital Foundry analysis reveals CPU constraints
The analysis points to Fortnite on Switch 2 as an example. The game uses transition zones to load new elements, which introduces frametime issues. Digital Foundry notes that enabling UE5 features would make these issues worse.
Other upcoming games may also struggle. Titles like Cronos: The New Dawn and Borderlands 4 already have difficulty running smoothly on CPUs such as the Ryzen 5 3600. The Switch 2's CPU is expected to be less powerful, indicating worse performance.
Digital Foundry has not confirmed whether any workaround exists to scale down UE5 features for the Switch 2. The analysis suggests that the CPU limitation is a fundamental constraint that cannot be easily overcome.
