Dell and Kioxia have jointly announced a 2U rack server that packs 9.8 petabytes of flash storage. The system uses 40 Kioxia LC9 series 245.76TB NVMe SSDs. It is designed for high-density storage workloads.
40 Kioxia LC9 SSDs deliver 9.8PB capacity
The LC9 SSD uses 8th-gen BiCS FLASH QLC 3D NAND with CBA direct bonding and 218-layer stacking. It supports PCIe 5.0 and delivers up to 12000 MB/s sequential read and 1.3 million IOPS random read. The PowerEdge R7725xd server features dual 5th-gen AMD EPYC 9005 CPUs, 24 DDR5 DIMM slots, air cooling, and up to five 400Gbps NICs.
Spec comparison
| Spec | Dell PowerEdge R7725xd with Kioxia LC9 SSDs |
|---|---|
| Form Factor | 2U rack server |
| Storage Capacity | 9.8 PB |
| Number of SSDs | 40 |
| SSD Model | Kioxia LC9 series 245.76 TB NVMe |
| SSD NAND | 8th-gen BiCS FLASH QLC 3D, 218-layer, CBA direct bonding |

Compared to using 30TB SSDs, Kioxia says this solution reduces power consumption by 8x and saves rack space. The combination of high-capacity SSDs and a compact form factor aims to lower total cost of ownership for data centers.
Dell and Kioxia have not disclosed pricing or availability for the PowerEdge R7725xd with LC9 SSDs. The system targets enterprises that need massive flash storage in a small footprint.
