Minecraft Java Edition Gets Peer-to-Peer Multiplayer Support

Mojang announced a significant update to Minecraft Java Edition on March 17, 2025. The developer is introducing peer-to-peer online multiplayer support for worlds originally created for single-player use. This change aims to simplify how players connect with friends without requiring complex network configurations.

Friends List overlay lets players send requests via O key

The update replaces the traditional Open to LAN option with a new Multiplayer Options screen. This screen offers Off, Local, and Online modes to control connectivity. A new Friends List overlay, accessible via the O key, allows players to send and receive friend requests using their Java Edition profile names. Xbox friends who own the Java Edition will also appear in this list.

Players can now select between Off, Local, and Online modes for connectivity.

Mojang stated that the goal is to provide an easy-to-access option within the game itself. The developer emphasized that this feature does not intend to replace existing methods of connecting with friends. The new multiplayer system is designed to remove the need for port forwarding or IP sharing, making it simpler for users to invite others.

These features are currently in testing via Snapshot 26.2 Snapshot 7. The functionality is scheduled to launch with the upcoming Chaos Cubed content update. It remains unclear whether the new peer-to-peer system will support modded games. Mojang has not confirmed the specific launch window for the Chaos Cubed update.
