Scammers Sell Fake DDR5 Memory With Empty Plastic Chips Relabeled To Pass As Legit Hardware

Reports indicate that counterfeit DDR5 SODIMMs are circulating in Asian markets. These modules appear to be standard memory sticks at first glance. However, they contain no functional internal circuitry.

Counterfeit modules contain hollow chips with no circuitry

The fake chips consist of empty plastic or fiberglass material. Sellers apply fake SK Hynix part number markings to the top of these hollow components. The modules also feature Samsung sticker labels despite physically resembling SK Hynix hardware.

These counterfeit items are appearing on secondhand marketplaces such as Mercari and Yahoo Auctions. Some listings describe the items as broken, but opportunistic buyers may resell them as working units. The scam is linked to the broader component shortage known as the RAMpocalypse.

A Japanese user identified as _TAKI_ warned others about these fake modules. The user removed and cut open a sample to confirm the lack of circuitry. They advised buyers to be cautious when purchasing untested memory to avoid hardware failures.

The origin of these fake modules remains unconfirmed. Reports suggest they may come from secondhand marketplace listings or Amazon bait-and-switch return scams. Vendors have not confirmed the specific source of the counterfeits.
