Grinding Gear Games is releasing a major free content update for Path of Exile 2 on May 29. The expansion, titled Return of the Ancients, introduces significant changes to the game's core structure and endgame progression. This update serves as a substantial step toward the game's full 1.0 release, which the studio plans to launch in 2026 after Exilecon in November.
Two new ascendancy classes join the roster alongside rune crafting
The update overhauls the endgame with a fully explorable, redesigned Atlas. Players can now access previously released league content at fixed locations within this new world. The expansion also adds five new storylines and a new league that features a rune crafting system. This system allows players to inscribe symbols into Ezomyte Remnants to create powerful effects. A new Kalguuran class-agnostic magic system introduces a defensive resource called Runic Ward.

Grinding Gear Games is adding two new ascendancy classes to the roster. The Spirit Walker is available for the Huntress character, while the Martial Artist is designed for the Monk. The update includes over 40 unique items, including a challenge system to earn the Knight of Aldur armour set. Quality of life improvements include navigational landmarks, instant trade price checks, and an in-game build guide system.
The Return of the Ancients update is available globally for all owners on May 29. Grinding Gear Games has not confirmed a specific date for the Path of Exile 2 1.0 release. The studio states that the full version will launch sometime after Exilecon in November 2026, but no exact timeline has been provided.
