Sony ends UBP-X700/K sales, leaving PS5 as only UHD Blu-ray player in Japan

Sony has stopped selling the UBP-X700/K, their last standalone UHD Blu-ray player in Japan. This makes it so Sony no longer sells a dedicated physical 4K disc playback device for consumers. If you want to buy Sony's dedicated UHD player there is no other option to buy now.

Sony stops selling UBP-X700/K, PS5 becomes sole 4K disc option

This is part of Sony's overall trend to leave physical media formats behind. They already stopped selling Blu-ray recorders and stopped manufacturing discs for PlayStation games. This marks a major shift for Sony in terms of leaving dedicated physical disc optical hardware behind and moving towards digital downloads and console based playback.

Sony has officially stopped selling the UBP-X700/K in Japan as of Oct 22, 2024. Their online store now marks it as out of stock and not planning to stock again. It's the last UHD Blu-ray player that was still being sold by Sony in Japan.

Panasonic is the last major electronics company that's still selling standalone UHD Blu-ray players in the world. Their Japanese store is currently unavailable for the UBP-X700/K but they haven't announced anywhere in the world (official press release) that they're stopping selling it outside of Japan. Right now Sony's only UHD Blu-ray player in the area is the PS5 console.
