Microsoft Photos app for Windows 11 gains native HEIC support, ending extension requirement

In its latest update to the Photos app for 11, Microsoft has resolved the issues with supporting various formats for a long time. For many users, the news will be welcomed as it removes the need to find and install third party extensions to display photos captured from iPhones or the latest cameras. In many ways, this is a long-term usability issue that Microsoft has finally resolved for Windows users.

Windows 11 Photos app update removes need for HEIF Image Extension

The big change here is that Microsoft has introduced native support for HEIC image format files. The HEIC format is the standard image format for Apple's devices and some Android cameras. With the re-designed Photos app, it is now possible to view, edit, and save HEIC image files without needing any additional software.

Previously, Windows 11 had no native ability to view HEIC images. To view images in this format, users would need to install the HEIF Image Extension or HEVC Video Extensions manually from the Microsoft Store. In some cases, the extensions that were previously needed might have a cost or come with unwanted software on top. All of that is removed because Microsoft's new Photos app natively supports the file type.

The updates are currently being made available to Windows Insiders on the latest builds. Microsoft is rolling out the changes using its standard software update distribution system. Eventually, it should be coming soon to general users of Windows 11 as it makes its way through the various release stages.
