Ubisoft’s Beyond Good & Evil 2 Shifts to Solo Adventure With Spider-Man Combat, Still in Pre-Production

Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been a problem child for Ubisoft for so long it's unclear if the project will ever see the light of day. For one thing, Ubisoft has changed the game into a solo (first) and optional co-op experience which means it's now a completely different type of experience than what people were expecting. This game has been in development since 2017 but there's no confirmed release date and no final game design yet.

Ubisoft's long-delayed sequel pivots to a solo-first adventure with Spider-Man-style combat while remaining stuck in pre-production

It's still in pre-production with over 250 people working on it at Ubisoft Montpellier. It's wild that the game is still in pre-production with over 250 staff members.

The game is designed to be a solo-first adventure. This is a different approach compared to the original game which had a strong emphasis on co-op gameplay when it was released in 2003.

They're saying the combat in the game will feel like the spider-man games from insomniac. (Unlike the stealth/puzzle in the original game) It's going to have strong story content, but you can play it co-op too. The big thing is it's single-player focused exploration first. They're trying to modernize the game while still delivering a strong story.

There is a big development gate coming that could result in the cancellation of the game if they can't make certain milestones. Ubisoft is still hiring for this project in late 2025, so they haven't given up on it yet. It's tricky to get to the bottom of what the problems are since it's still a working project according to a source close to the development team.

It's unclear what's going to happen with Beyond Good & Evil 2. The sequel has been in development for so long now. With a big team, a changing game design and a big development gate, it's a big challenge for the publisher. So…we'll have to wait and see if they make it through the development gate or if they ultimately just decide to can the project.
