There's a shift from MiniLED to OLED in high end laptop screens. This impacts those of you who want to buy thinner models with better contrast. Counterpoint Research expects a 38% drop in the shipments of MiniLED notebook panels in 2024.

OLED shipments surge 50% in 2024 as MiniLED fades from premium laptops

And another 60% drop in 2025. This sharp reduction shows the waning influence of MiniLED in the premium laptop market. And makers are gravitating towards the benefits of OLED.

If you're after the latest screen technology for your premium laptop. Expect OLED to dominate flagship laptops in the next couple of years.

OLED screens are becoming popular for high end laptops. Because they make devices thinner and don't require a backlight. Backlight layers are not required with OLED.

So that makes for thinner devices. And it's more power efficient compared to LCD and MiniLED. For example, Apple is expected to move from MiniLED to OLED in the next generation of their MacBook Pro.

This may result in high demand for OLED. In fact, Display is the sole supplier for this new Apple hardware. This shows how the market is currently consolidating for this new display.

In general the notebook display market is shrinking. And overall we can expect a 3% drop in panel shipments this year in 2024. But even so, we see a 50% increase in panel shipments for OLED in 2024.

And then another 24% increase in 2025. This demonstrates the distinct differentiation between market segments. And where the premium market is growing while the overall market is declining.

And by the year 2027, we can expect an around 75% drop in shipments for MiniLED from 2025. And this confirms MiniLED as a legacy technology in notebooks.

Laptop makers are moving away from MiniLED screens. Which were previously the go-to solution for high dynamic range. Now they're making the switch to OLED screens.

So buyers can expect OLED to be the standard for premium laptops. No longer a luxury upgrade. According to Counterpoint Research.

OLED screens are preferred for high end laptops. And we can expect a substantial drop in shipments for MiniLED. We're seeing the demise of MiniLED in notebooks as we fully transition to the next generation of display technology.
