Lucasfilm is reportedly shopping Star Wars Battlefront 3 to EA DICE and Bungie after EA's exclusive license expired, with no official developer confirmed yet.

It seems Lucasfilm is on the hunt for a new developer partner for Star Wars Battlefront 3 that will take a deviation from the typical development model for the series. This is a big step change in the way that Disney is handling one of its most popular game IP's, especially given how well the player counts for Battlefront 2 held up in 2025, despite no new content. The hunt for a new development team for Star Wars Battlefront 3 means that if you're waiting for a new game in the series, you'll need to wait until the studio finds a suitable candidate to helm the new game.

Lucasfilm seeks new developer for Star Wars Battlefront 3 as EA exclusivity ends

The reason for searching for a new developer is down to the expiry of Electronic Art's exclusive Star Wars IP, which meant the series was previously anchored to the EA universe. Now that that exclusivity period is over, Lucasfilm can seek out new development partners amongst the other big studios who have the technology chops for a big multiplayer experience. This creates a bit of a competitive race as some of the best developers are vying for the chance to spearhead the next entry in the series.

As it stands there seem to be a couple of candidates who are leading the pack for developer duty. Obviously the most likely candidate for the role would be EA DICE given their previous experience with the series. However, the controversy surrounding their loot box situation might weigh on Lucasfilm's mind.

Another contender that has popped up is Bungie who could be the new development team if DICE doesn't get the nod. Bungie have the experience of Halo, Destiny and Marathon up their sleeves.

As it stands, no developer has officially been confirmed or contracted for the project just yet. Industry insiders seem to think that the developer Lucasfilm chooses will probably be determined by who fits best with the vision they have for a modern Battlefront game. So we'll have to wait for the official announcement to see which developer ends up stepping into the hot seat to helm the next entry in the series.

All we know at the moment is based on industry hearsay and gaming publications like Electronic Gaming Monthly. Of course we have no official confirmation on the development of Star Wars Battlefront 3 until an official statement comes from Lucasfilm. Until then, all we've got are rumors and conjecture that we can use to fuel our speculation at this stage.
