AMD Zen Processors Hit by TLB Defect Causing Silent Data Corruption, Microcode Fix Released

A hardware defect in Zen processors risks silent data corruption and system crashes, which means users relying on these chips face potential data loss without immediate mitigation. The issue stems from a flaw in the Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) invalidation logic, a critical component for managing memory access speed and security. We need to address this now because unpatched systems remain vulnerable to instability during routine operations.

AMD releases microcode and Linux kernel patches for TLBI Erratum #1718

The specific flaw, identified as TLBI Erratum #1718, impacts how the processor handles INVLPGB and TLBSYNC instruction pairs. When these instructions fail to execute correctly, the CPU may retain stale memory mappings, leading to applications reading or writing to incorrect locations. This silent corruption is particularly dangerous because it can go undetected until it causes a crash or compromises data integrity.

AMD has released a microcode update to correct the hardware behavior at the silicon level. This fix directly addresses the instruction pair failure, restoring proper TLB invalidation sequences for affected Zen processors. Systems with updated microcode will no longer experience the specific corruption patterns associated with Erratum #1718.

For users who cannot immediately apply the microcode update, the kernel version 7.3-rc7 introduces a software workaround. This patch forces an extra TLBSYNC instruction after INVLPGB calls, effectively neutralizing the defect in software. AMD engineer Borislav Petkov submitted this patch to ensure Linux users have a safety net while waiting for broader firmware distribution.
