The project comes from a modder known as techmagnet, who built the first known water-cooled version of the Steam Machine. The core of the modification is a custom block that replaces the original air cooling system. This block combines a machined copper plate with a clear acrylic top to manage heat transfer from the processor and graphics chip.

This setup moves heat away from the main components more effectively than the stock configuration.
Under full load, the system runs 20 to 30 degrees Celsius cooler on both the CPU and GPU. Despite these gains, the project is not finished. The modder notes that the voltage regulator module MOSFETs are small and already operate close to their thermal design limits, so VRM cooling remains a challenge for future iterations.
