AMD has revealed the architectural roadmap for its sixth-generation EPYC 9006 server processors, introducing a tiered lineup that prioritizes massive core counts and next-generation connectivity. This expansion matters to data center operators because it offers distinct hardware paths for different workload profiles, ranging from general-purpose compute to specialized high-density caching. Buyers can now plan infrastructure upgrades around specific release windows that stretch from late 2026 through the second half of 2027.
AMD outlines four server processor platforms with release windows through 2027
The EPYC 9006 family splits into four distinct platforms: SP7, SP8, 9006X, and LP. The flagship SP7 variant leads the charge with up to 256 Zen 6c cores and 512 threads per socket. Full-size Zen 6 models on this platform cap out at 96 cores and 192 threads. AMD designed these processors to support up to 600W of power consumption, allowing for high-performance configurations in dense server racks.

Technical specifications highlight significant jumps in memory bandwidth and I/O standards. The SP7 platform supports 16 memory channels with DDR5 speeds up to 8,000 MT/s or second-generation MRDIMMs running at 12,800 MT/s. This configuration delivers a claimed maximum bandwidth of 1.6 TB/s. The architecture also integrates PCIe 6.0, providing 64 Gbps per lane for faster data transfer to accelerators and storage.
The EPYC 9006X variant targets workloads requiring massive cache, offering up to 1,152MB of L3 cache through AMD 3D V-Cache. AMD reports performance gains of up to 3.7 times in NGINX workloads and 3.5 times in MongoDB compared to the Intel Xeon 6980P. The company also claims 3.1 times the performance in GROMACS and NAMD simulations. These results come from AMD’s own test systems and do not represent independent testing.
Availability for the EPYC 9006 series rolls out in phases over the next two years. The first SP7 systems are scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter of 2026. The SP8 platform will follow in the first half of 2027. The 9006X and LP variants are both set to arrive in the second half of 2027.
