Android Fake Call Detection: Google Uses RCS to Stop AI Scams

Google is rolling out a new security feature that uses RCS to verify caller identity and block AI-generated fake calls. The feature, announced on June 2, 2026, aims to combat the rising threat of voice scams.

Feature works through Phone by Google app

The feature works through the Phone by Google app and requires both parties to use the same app. It relies on an encrypted handshake over RCS to confirm the caller is legitimate.

The verification process runs entirely over end-to-end encrypted RCS. Google says no call audio or content is transmitted to its servers. The feature is separate from Scam Detection and does not analyze audio.

Rollout begins with Pixel phones

The feature is on by default for Android 12 and later devices. Rollout begins this month, starting with Pixel phones. It builds on an earlier verified financial calls feature.

Google's approach uses existing RCS infrastructure rather than audio analysis. This avoids privacy concerns associated with processing call audio. The company emphasizes that the entire verification is encrypted.

The feature is now rolling out globally through Phone by Google to all Android 12 and later devices. Pixel hardware gets it first. Users do not need to take any action to enable it.
