OpenAI is bringing the full Codex experience to the ChatGPT app. The move puts AI-assisted coding and workflow tools directly in front of ChatGPT's massive user base. Codex usage has grown sixfold since the desktop app launched in February, and it now has over five million weekly active users.

New role-specific plugins target diverse teams

Codex is OpenAI's platform for developers and knowledge workers. While developers remain the largest user group, knowledge workers now represent about 20% of users and are growing three times as fast. The new integration means users can access Codex capabilities without switching to a separate application.

OpenAI announced six new role-specific plugins for Codex. These cover data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, public equity investing, and investment banking. Each plugin connects Codex with the apps, context, and workflows used by those teams. The plugins collectively support 62 popular apps and 110 skills.

Sites feature enables shareable interactive web apps

The company also introduced Sites, a new Codex feature for creating and sharing interactive hosted websites and apps. Unlike static documents, Sites can be updated as project information changes. Created sites can be shared with anyone in a workspace through a URL. Sites is now available in preview for Business and Enterprise customers.

Codex annotations are expanded beyond code to include documents, spreadsheets, and slides. Users can select a specific part of their work and request a targeted change. This allows refinement without asking Codex to recreate the entire file every time.

The new role-specific plugins are now rolling out in Codex in supported regions. OpenAI is also developing similar plugins for corporate finance, private equity investing, marketing strategy, strategy consulting, and legal. In the future, partners will be able to create and deploy plugins directly within Codex and ChatGPT.

Codex now has over five million weekly active users, with knowledge workers growing three times as fast as developers. The integration with ChatGPT and the new plugins and Sites feature aim to support both technical and non-technical teams.
