Microsoft has added a Copilot-powered file renaming feature to OneDrive that analyzes uploaded documents and images to suggest descriptive, context-aware names. The update targets users who manage large libraries of files with generic or unhelpful titles by offering automated suggestions after upload or manual rename attempts.
Copilot analyzes documents and images to suggest descriptive names for better file organization
The new Suggested Rename tool appears in the OneDrive web interface as a dialog box presenting three recommended options. Users can select one suggestion to apply, keep their existing filename, or dismiss the prompt entirely. Users can access this functionality through the existing OneDrive interface, allowing for seamless integration with their current file organization habits.
Suggested Rename currently supports Microsoft Office formats including Word DOCX, PowerPoint PPTX, and Excel XLSX files. It also processes PDF documents, Markdown text files, and common image formats to extract relevant content for naming suggestions. Copilot processes the uploaded files directly in the web interface to generate descriptive name suggestions based on their content.
The feature is tracked on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap with an expected release date of June 2026 for the OneDrive web version. The update is included at no extra cost for current Microsoft 365 subscribers, requiring no new settings or adjustments to access the feature. Microsoft has not provided specific details on how this content analysis might affect system performance or processing speeds.
The new renaming tool builds upon earlier artificial intelligence features introduced to the platform, including automated photo labeling and intelligent file categorization. This addition expands OneDrive's role beyond simple storage, aligning it more closely with comprehensive office applications that prioritize intelligent document organization tools.
