Microsoft released Visual Studio Code 1.124 to improve how its AI agents handle repetitive coding tasks. The update shifts Autopilot from an opt-in feature to the default setting for all users. This change lets agents take initiative without requiring explicit approval for every action.
Autopilot enabled by default for faster agent workflows and improved autonomy.
The new version introduces an Advanced Autopilot utility model that reads chat transcripts and determines when a task is complete. Users no longer need to manually monitor agent loops or confirm each step. The Agents window now supports background sessions, allowing developers to compose the next session while one runs.
Session navigation receives improvements with quick keyboard switching between active tasks. Layout persistence prevents users from losing workspace state during transitions. The integrated browser retains page history and displays suggestions in the URL bar when typing.
Experimental enterprise-managed Copilot plugin policies let administrators centrally control available chat plugins and marketplaces. This gives IT teams oversight over which tools developers can access within the environment. Microsoft ships version 1.124 automatically to existing installations or prompts users to update.
