Square Enix is introducing an artificial intelligence companion into Dragon Quest X. The new character, named Chatty Slimey, utilizes Google's Gemini technology to function as a conversational NPC. This integration marks a shift from static dialogue trees to dynamic, responsive interactions within the game world.
Creator Yuji Hori aims for the AI to serve as a friend
Dragon Quest creator Yuji Hori designed the AI to serve as a friend to each individual player. He stated that his original vision for the series involved townspeople speaking like real humans. Modern AI capabilities now allow the game to fulfill this goal by generating natural, human-like responses.
Hori noted that players often feel embarrassed treating standard AI assistants as friends. Game characters lower this social barrier, making it easier for players to discuss various topics. The AI companion may also act as an entry point for beginners to learn gameplay mechanics.
The partnership between Square Enix and Google aims to make the AI feel even more human. Hori believes players might consider these AI characters as friends even after they stop playing the game. This approach seeks to deepen the emotional connection between the audience and the virtual world.
Square Enix announced the Chatty Slimey feature for March 2026. The company has not confirmed specific pricing or regional availability for the update.
