New COM-HPC module integrates Zen 5 CPU and RDNA GPU for factory automation

The core of the EDGE+ Apex is a COM-HPC Client Type-B System on Module (SOM) that houses the AMD Ryzen AI Embedded X100 processor. This processor integrates Zen 5 CPU cores, RDNA graphics, and an XDNA 2 NPU into a unified memory architecture. Sapphire pairs this SOM with a dedicated carrier board that includes an AMD UltraScale+ FPGA to handle specific real-time control tasks. The combination creates a complete computing environment for edge AI and robotics applications.

Specifications

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen AI Embedded X100 Series
  • Module Type: COM-HPC Client Type-B SOM
  • Memory: Up to 128GB LPDDR5X
  • CPU Architecture: Zen 5
  • GPU Architecture: RDNA

The platform supports up to 128GB of LPDDR5X memory to handle large datasets required for machine learning and sensor fusion. It includes a suite of industrial interfaces designed for direct connection to robotic components and networks. These interfaces include GMSL for camera inputs, CAN-FD and EtherCAT for motor control, and TSN for time-sensitive networking. The board also features QSFP-based multi-gigabit Ethernet, USB4 Type-C, OCuLink for PCIe Gen5 expansion, and an integrated IMU for motion sensing.

Security and safety are built into the hardware design with TPM 2.0 support and compliance with functional safety standards. The system is compatible with AMD ROCm, providing an open software environment for AI development. This compatibility aims to shorten development cycles by allowing teams to use existing tools and libraries. The platform is positioned for use in industrial automation, autonomous mobile robots, and other safety-critical environments.

Sapphire Technology unveiled the EDGE+ Apex as a solution for the growing demand for physical AI in industrial settings. The platform is scheduled for release in 2026. No pricing or specific availability details have been confirmed at this time. The announcement marks Sapphire's entry into the COM-HPC robotics market with a focus on AMD's embedded AI processors.
