NVIDIA Smooth Motion, a driver-level frame generation feature designed for RTX 40 and newer GPUs, now runs on older GeForce RTX 30 Series hardware through unofficial community modifications. This development matters because it extends access to artificial frame generation to a large installed base of Ampere-based graphics cards that lack official support. Users with these older cards can now experiment with smoother gameplay in titles that do not natively support NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation.
Community projects enable driver-level frame generation on older Ampere hardware
Two separate projects have successfully enabled this capability on the RTX 30 Series. The first project, dlssg_for_sm86-MFG by pipotoufikxyz-lgtm, adds Smooth Motion and Vulkan support to the existing DLSS-G runtime. The second project, NVSmooth30 by ItsAdeline, serves as a clean-room compatibility experiment that patches the NvPresent64.dll file for SM86 hardware. These independent efforts demonstrate that the driver-level injection path is accessible outside of NVIDIA's official software distribution.
Smooth Motion operates at the driver level rather than requiring game-specific implementation. This architectural difference allows it to support a broader range of games because it does not depend on an existing DLSS Frame Generation implementation within the game code. The feature functions independently of the native DLSS pipeline, opening up frame generation to titles that would otherwise be excluded from the technology.
The projects are strictly experimental and carry significant stability risks for users. DLL injection can cause crashes and can conflict with anti-cheat software, so these projects are primarily intended for experimentation in single-player titles. Testing has revealed that the RTX 3080 showed more visible artifacts than the RTX 5070 Ti during evaluations. NVIDIA officially supports the driver-level frame generation feature on GeForce RTX 40 and newer GPUs, but Ampere support is not exposed through the NVIDIA App.
We touched on Nvidia Driver Bug Fix Boosts RPCS3 in our earlier Nvidia coverage. The current modifications remain unofficial workarounds for hardware that NVIDIA has not officially enabled for this specific feature set. Users interested in these capabilities should proceed with caution and avoid multiplayer environments where anti-cheat conflicts are likely.
