The global gaming market generated a record $201.6 billion in revenue during 2025, reflecting a 9.1 percent increase from the previous year. This financial milestone highlights the continued expansion of the industry despite ongoing structural challenges within game development studios. Newzoo released these findings to provide a comprehensive overview of the sector's performance across all major platforms and regions.

Mobile and PC drive growth while studios face structural cost challenges
Mobile gaming maintained its position as the dominant revenue segment, contributing $113.3 billion to the total. This figure represents a 10.7 percent growth rate, underscoring the persistent popularity of smartphone-based titles. PC gaming also showed strong momentum, with revenue climbing 12 percent to reach $43.6 billion. Console sales contributed $44.7 billion, marking a modest 2.8 percent increase over the prior year.
Revenue streams varied significantly across different monetization models and geographic areas. Microtransactions on PC platforms grew by 9.1 percent, fueled by popular titles such as Counter-Strike 2 and Roblox. In contrast, console microtransaction revenue declined by 4.6 percent, indicating a shift in player spending habits. North America recorded the lowest growth among major regions at 5.7 percent, while the Middle East and Africa emerged as the fastest-growing market with 15.0 percent expansion.
Newzoo projects that the industry will continue to expand, forecasting a compound annual growth rate of 5.1 percent through 2028. This trajectory anticipates total revenue reaching $234.4 billion, with major releases like Grand Theft Auto VI expected to drive significant sales. Despite these positive financial indicators, the sector faces ongoing labor challenges. Companies continue to implement layoffs due to overspending and unsustainable cost structures that do not align with current profit margins.
