Apple is preparing a major redesign for its high-end laptop lineup. The MacBook Ultra, expected in late 2026, will bring a touchscreen, a thinner chassis, and a new OLED display. This marks a significant shift for the MacBook line, which has long resisted touch input.
Samsung to supply OLED panels
The MacBook Ultra will come in two sizes: 14.3 inches and 16.3 inches. Both models will use hybrid OLED panels supplied by Samsung, starting in July 2026. The laptop is expected to launch in Q3 2026, possibly alongside the foldable iPhone Ultra and iPhone 18 Pro.
Specifications
- Display size: 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch OLED
- Display technology: Hybrid OLED with oxide TFT and RGB tandem
- Processor: M6 Pro/M6 Max
- Design features: Thinner design, Dynamic Island, touchscreen
The hybrid OLED display with oxide TFT and RGB tandem is a key upgrade for power efficiency. Apple is moving to a hybrid OLED architecture that combines oxide TFT and RGB tandem layers. According to Omdia practice leader Jerry Kang, this design lowers power consumption compared to traditional LTPO or single-layer RGB OLEDs.
M6 Pro and M6 Max chips expected
Under the hood, the MacBook Ultra will run on Apple's M6 Pro or M6 Max chips. The laptop is also rumored to feature a Dynamic Island cutout instead of the current notch, and a thinner, lighter frame. A touchscreen would be a first for a MacBook.
The MacBook Ultra is expected to launch in Q3 2026. Apple has not confirmed pricing or exact availability dates. The device will likely debut at a September event alongside other new products.
Reports from analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggest the touchscreen and Dynamic Island are part of the redesign. These features are not yet confirmed by Apple. The OLED panel supply deal with Samsung adds weight to the display rumors.
The MacBook Ultra is expected to unify laptop and tablet experiences with a touchscreen and thinner design. With a touchscreen, thinner design, and M6 Pro/M6 Max chips, it aims to compete with high-end Windows convertibles. The hybrid OLED display promises better battery life, a practical benefit for users.
