Intel has announced Project Firefly, an initiative to produce cheaper laptops powered by its Wildcat Lake processors. The project aims to reduce costs by standardizing interfaces and integrating components derived from China's phone supply chain. The first laptop under Project Firefly is Lenovo's Lecoo Air 14.

Wildcat Lake laptops launched in China starting May 19. Models include the Honor Notebook X14, ASUS Fearless 14SE, and HP OmniBook 3, all featuring the mid-range Core 5 320 CPU. Intel also showed a reference design with an 11mm-thin chassis.

Pricing for these laptops in China starts at 570 USD (about $570) for the Honor Notebook X14, 600 USD (about $600) for the ASUS Fearless 14SE, and 660 USD (about $660) for the HP OmniBook 3. A CHUWI UniBook model is available at 449 USD (about $449), while the Honor MagicBook X14 is listed at 849 USD (about $849).
Over 70 designs based on Project Firefly are expected in the first wave. According to TweakTown, the Core 5 320 CPU delivers a 21% better PassMark result than the Apple A18 Pro used in the MacBook Neo. It remains to be seen whether Project Firefly will achieve tangible success for the platform.
