THQ Nordic has announced Expeditions: Samurai, a new tactical RPG set in Sengoku-era Japan. The game puts players in the role of a privateer, not the historical figure William Adams. This choice reshapes the narrative, offering a fresh perspective on the period.

A new tactical RPG set in feudal Japan
Expeditions: Samurai is developed by Campfire Cabal. It runs on Unreal Engine 5. The game features real-time exploration and turn-based combat, with stealth as a third core pillar. A full two-player campaign co-op mode allows simultaneous combat resolution.
The game includes eight companion characters. At full release, it will offer over 45 levels and more than 100 events and encounters. Total playtime is estimated at around 60 hours. The developers stated that no generative AI was used in the game's creation.

Expeditions: Samurai is planned to launch in Early Access in August 2026. The full 1.0 release is scheduled for early 2027. No pricing information has been announced yet.
Expeditions: Samurai is the latest installment in the Expeditions series, which has previously explored historical settings such as Rome and Viking conquests. Expeditions: Samurai shifts the focus to feudal Japan, a period rich with conflict and intrigue.
