AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon have formed a joint venture to expand direct-to-device satellite coverage. The partnership aims to provide seamless satellite connectivity for smartphones, including Apple iPhones.
Carriers collaborate on satellite infrastructure
Apple currently relies on Globalstar for Emergency SOS and Roadside Assistance. However, Amazon is acquiring Globalstar's LEO satellite constellation. Apple plans to enhance its direct-to-device capabilities with features such as satellite navigation in Maps, RCS messaging, indoor connectivity, 5G NTN support, and a developer API.
Verizon's CEO stated in the press release: "We are not just closing gaps on a map, we are building resilient digital infrastructure that meets the changing needs of our customers, no matter where life takes them."
The joint venture represents a significant shift in the US wireless industry, as the three major carriers collaborate on infrastructure. This move could reduce reliance on individual satellite partners and create a unified network for emergency and everyday connectivity.
