AMD brings FSR 4.1 to Radeon RX 6000 GPUs, skipping the 2027 wait

AMD accelerates FSR 4.1 support to Radeon RX 6000 GPUs and Ryzen AI APUs, releasing a smaller AI model for handhelds and improving image quality over FSR 3.1.

AMD brings FSR 4.1 to Radeon RX 6000 GPUs, skipping the 2027 wait

has accelerated the implementation of FSR 4.1 to legacy GPU's, by several months, to RX 6000 series. The tech was originally slated to be supported on these hardware in 2027, but now, the current users of these legacy graphics card, can now utilize the latest upscaling features, and don't have to wait until the next gen of graphics cards are out. This tech upgrade helps users keep up the frame rates even on the old hardware and keeps their setup relevant longer.

FSR 4.1 expands to legacy Radeon RX 6000 GPUs and new Ryzen APUs

AMD introduced the support with Adrenalin Edition driver 26.10.1 on Oct 20. It doesn't just bring support for the FSR 4.1 to the Radeon RX 6000 series GPU's, but also broadens the scope of integrated GPU solutions that can support the FSR 4.1. Among the new set of supported processor, are the AI Max 300 & 400 series.

  • Driver Version: Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1
  • Supported GPU Architecture: RDNA 2
  • Supported CPU/APU: Ryzen AI Max 300/400, Ryzen AI 9 300/400, Strix Halo, Gorgon Halo, Ryzen Z2 Extreme, Z2 A
  • Model Size: Less than half the size of the original M8 model

Ryzen AI 9 300 & 400 series and Strix Halo/Gorgon Halo APU's. These features are also introduced in handheld gaming devices with Ryzen Z2 Extreme & Z2 A processor.

As an additional step to take the constraints of handheld gaming into consideration, AMD also released a smaller AI model for the new implementation. This model is half the size of the original M8 model, which has been seen in the previous versions of the tech. This smaller size of the upscaling tech is introduced to make it efficient on the low thermal & power consumption hardware. This way, even on the portable setups, one can enjoy the performance boost from FSR 4.1, without taxing the hardware too much.

According to AMD, FSR 4.1 Performance mode provides a better image quality in comparison to FSR 3.1, for the higher quality preset. AMD demoed the tech on the integrated GPU and managed to stay above 60 FPS in these cases. However, they didn't show any performance numbers on the discrete cards like the RX 6800 XT for the 4k resolution. This implementation is now globally available as part of the Oct 20 driver.
