Micron Technology is expanding its DRAM manufacturing operations at the Manassas plant in Virginia, United States. The company announced a major investment exceeding $2 billion to support this initiative. This expansion includes a dedicated production line for DDR4 and LP4 memory modules.
Micron quadruples DDR4 wafer output at Virginia plant by late 2026
The facility will utilize Micron's 1α process node, which achieves sub-15nm cell sizes. This technology increases bit density by approximately 40% compared to the previous 1z process. Upon completion of the expansion, the plant's DDR4 wafer output is expected to quadruple.
Micron plans to begin mass production delivery at the Virginia facility by late 2026. The project aims to address current market shortages without competing with lines focused on AI-driven HBM or DDR5 memory. This strategic focus supports specific industry demand for established memory standards.
The investment package includes a $275 million grant from the CHIPS Act program. Micron expects the expansion to create over 3,100 jobs in the region. The company is positioning this facility as a key supplier for standard DRAM applications while maintaining specialized lines for advanced computing needs.
