The device uses ray tracing technology to generate elemental images at high speeds. This approach allows the optical path depth to shrink significantly compared to conventional designs. NHK reports that the optical path depth reduced by 79 percent relative to standard light field HMDs.

The development targets applications in virtual and augmented reality environments. The laboratory focuses on creating more comfortable viewing experiences for extended use sessions.
