Epic Games has released a preview of Unreal Engine 5.8. The update introduces a new Lumen Medium Quality mode designed for handheld gaming devices.
Lumen Medium Quality doubles performance
Lumen Medium Quality is twice as fast as Lumen high quality. It targets 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and handhelds. The mode uses Irradiance Fields with Probe Occlusion for global illumination. It is now the default setting for current-gen handheld consoles. MegaLights has also reached full production readiness, offering faster and cleaner lighting workflows.
Other features in the preview include Mesh Terrain in experimental form, improvements to PCG, enhancements to the Procedural Vegetation Editor, and a new MetaHuman Crowd Plugin.
Epic Games has not confirmed a final release date for Unreal Engine 5.8.
