Steam Controller Now Works Without Steam Thanks to SDL Support

Valve's Steam Controller now works without the Steam client. The SDL library has been updated to fully support the controller's inputs. This change allows the controller to be used in any application that supports SDL.

SDL library update enables full input support

The SDL library now recognizes the Steam Controller's back buttons, touchpads, and gyroscope. These features were previously only available through Steam's own input mapping. The update makes the controller a standard gamepad for SDL-compatible software.

Some limitations remain. Game Pass titles and advanced features may not work correctly with the new SDL support. Valve has not confirmed a timeline for addressing these issues.

The update was detailed on GitHub and reported by Phoronix. It is unclear when Valve will expand support to cover all scenarios.
