OpenAI has integrated its AI coding agent Codex into the ChatGPT mobile app. The move brings the tool to smartphones for the first time. Codex can now be used on the go without requiring a desktop computer.
Full coding functionality on smartphones
The mobile version retains full functionality. Users can write, edit, and debug code directly within the ChatGPT app. A secure relay layer enables cross-device access, allowing work to continue seamlessly between phone and computer.
Codex is available globally starting May 14, 2025. The integration is live for all ChatGPT mobile users.
Codex was previously limited to desktop browsers. The mobile expansion makes AI-assisted coding more accessible for developers who need to work remotely or on the move. OpenAI has not detailed any changes to the underlying model or performance on mobile hardware.
