The European Union is considering building an undersea cable across the Arctic to connect Europe and Asia. The project, called Polar Connect, aims to bypass the Strait of Hormuz and Russia. It targets operational status by 2030.
Two Arctic routes planned
Polar Connect would involve two Arctic cable routes. The Arctic ice presents challenges for laying and maintaining the cables. A previous Arctic cable project, Quintillion, experienced ice-related breaks and delays.
The EU expects Polar Connect to be operational by 2030. However, Arctic conditions may cause delays, according to sources.
The project would provide an alternative to Middle East chokepoints. It remains unclear how the EU will address the technical difficulties posed by Arctic ice.
