Apple Rolls Out End-to-End Encrypted RCS Messages in Beta for iPhone

Apple has started rolling out end-to-end encryption for RCS messages in beta. The feature is available for iPhone users running iOS 26.5 and Android users on the latest version of Google Messages. It requires support from carriers.

Encryption enabled by default for all conversations

The encryption is enabled by default for new and existing conversations. A lock icon will appear in RCS chats to indicate the encryption status. Apple said it led a cross-industry effort with Google to bring end-to-end encryption to RCS, making it a more secure and private option compared to traditional SMS.

The beta rollout began in May 2026 and is available globally where supported. Apple has not specified when the feature will graduate from beta.

Apple noted that iMessage remains the best way to communicate between Apple devices. The company introduced RCS support to iOS in 2024.
