Apple has released iOS 26.5, a free software update for iPhones that requires a download of approximately 4.2 GB. The update arrives in May 2026 and introduces several new features aimed at improving messaging and visual customization. It also brings specific regional enhancements for users in the European Union.
EU users can now forward live activities to accessories
A key addition in this release is support for Rich Communication Services, which is currently in a beta phase. This feature enables end-to-end encrypted messaging between iPhones and Android devices. The functionality requires recipients to use the latest version of the Google Messages app. Apple has limited this beta support to specific carriers in the United States, including AT&T, Boost Mobile, and Verizon.

The update also adds a dynamic wallpaper named Pride Luminance to celebrate Pride Month in June. Users in the European Union gain the ability to forward live activities to supported accessory products. Apple has not confirmed whether this update includes improved support for third-party smartwatches, leaving that feature status unclear.
iOS 26.5 is available for download in the United States starting in May 2026. The update is distributed as a free software patch and does not carry a separate purchase price. Availability is currently confirmed for major US carriers such as AT&T, Boost Mobile, and Verizon.
