Apple Education Store Now Requires Verification to Prevent Discount Abuse

Apple has updated its Education Store policy to require formal verification of eligibility for student and educator discounts. The company ended the previous honor system model, which relied on self-reporting, to prevent unauthorized users from accessing reduced pricing. This change affects purchasing in the United States, Australia, Hong Kong, Turkey, Canada, and Chile.

Teachers must submit state ID or passport for verification

The verification process is managed through a partnership with UNiDAYS. Students must create an account and confirm their academic status via their school's portal. Educators face different requirements. Teachers must submit a state ID, passport, or driver's license. Homeschool educators need to provide a homeschool document along with a Letter of Intent.

Apple limits the number of discounted items a verified user can purchase. Eligible customers may buy one desktop, one Mac mini, one notebook, two iPads, or two accessories. The verification process typically takes up to 24 hours to complete. Apple previously removed the honor system in 2022 due to similar concerns regarding discount abuse.

This policy shift marks a significant change in how Apple manages its educational sales channel. The move prioritizes strict eligibility checks over the convenience of the previous self-declaration method. The company aims to ensure that discounts reach only qualified students and educators.
