Joby Aviation completed the first fully autonomous flight across the United States, a milestone that proves autonomous systems can handle long-haul domestic routes. This achievement matters because it validates the core technology needed for future air taxi networks and cargo logistics. The flight demonstrates that self-piloting aircraft can manage complex cross-country journeys without human intervention.
Autonomous Cessna Caravan completes 3,199-mile route
The aircraft involved was a modified Cessna Caravan equipped with Joby's proprietary autonomous flight system. Joby combined this technology with a standard airframe to test the limits of its software. The flight began at Buchanan Field in California and ended at Dare County Regional Airport in North Carolina. This route covers a significant portion of the continental United States.
The total flight distance reached 3,199 miles, which equals approximately 5,148 kilometers. The aircraft executed all standard flight phases autonomously, including taxiing, takeoff, cruising, and landing. A safety pilot remained onboard during the journey to ensure operational security. The flight was also monitored remotely from control centers in California and South Carolina.
Joby is simultaneously developing a fully electric manned air taxi for commercial passenger service. The company has already conducted demonstrations of this vehicle in New York City. Joby plans to launch commercial service for this electric aircraft by the end of the year. The autonomous technology tested in the Cessna Caravan aims to support commercial cargo and defense logistics in the future.
