This update matters because it allows legacy hardware to run modern productivity apps without requiring expensive new components. The operating system bridges the gap between aging processors and current software demands through a proprietary compatibility engine.

Legacy x86 hardware gains modern security and developer tools
The desktop edition supports Intel Core processors from the second generation through the eleventh generation. It also works with AMD Ryzen 2000G to 4000 Series APUs. For graphics, the system handles discrete GPUs ranging from the AMD RX 380 to the RX 5000 series. This broad hardware support ensures that machines built over the last decade remain functional for daily tasks.
Security remains a central feature of this release, as the OS holds Ministry of Public Security Level 4 certification and CCRC EAL5+ accreditation. Developers get a head start with native pre-installation of VS Code, which operates without requiring containers or offline packages. The system also integrates OpenClaw and AI agent programming tools to assist with coding workflows.
Users can access popular applications like WeChat, WPS Office, and Douyin through the system's compatibility layer. The platform includes a distributed soft bus to enable collaboration with other devices in the HarmonyOS ecosystem. Shen Kaihong has contributed more than 10 million lines of code to the OpenHarmony community to support these capabilities. The OS is currently available for download globally.
Plans are underway to adapt the operating system to newer hardware platforms, though support for Intel 12th Gen and newer CPUs is not yet confirmed.
